For me, Hi8 feels distinctly 90s. Growing up in that era, I’ve always loved the aesthetic. Fashion was an early passion of mine, influenced by my mum, a designer-maker, I was always excited to see the newest Vivienne Westwood catwalk. The effortless cool of 90s supermodels, grainy behind-the-scenes footage, music videos and perfume adverts and the way everything felt a little raw and unpolished.
That visual language definitely influences the way I film on Hi8. I’m drawn to movement, close-ups, unexpected moments and imagery that feels instinctive rather than overly posed or perfect.
There’s something so special about the way Hi8 captures things. The softness, the colours, the analogue texture and all those little imperfections give the footage a warmth that digital video just can’t quite recreate. It feels like a memory rather than a perfectly polished film, nostalgic, intimate and a little bit imperfect in all the right ways.
